Project:)

The above sketches are from a life-drawing club I attended. The model had the most beautiful eyes and a 'classical look', all of which I tried desperately:) to capture on paper. The face turned out alright, but I wasn't quite able to draw her full figure the way I intended... I noticed I had a tendency to draw the figure the way I envisioned it in my head; instead of observing the model accurately.



This sketch will become part of the earlier mentioned 'Solaris' illustration. I drew and inked her today, and added some color and shadow very quickly to see what it would do. So more to come!

Updates

I feel stupid for never updating this blog, but more so for drawing so rarely. It comes naturally to me, but then I hardly ever practice! In the mean time, a Rudolph Valentino caricature I made a second ago, a life-drawing from nature and some photos I collected from newspapers because I like them.

Kes

I finally picked up drawing again. I made a sketch of Kes, a character from the 'Startrek Voyager' series. More to come!

Prague & Vienna

With a friend I spend a long week in Prague and Vienna. Such beautiful cities! Some pictures I shot:

'The shadow of the wind'

I just finished reading 'The shadow of the wind' by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and enjoyed it immensely! What a book! I made this sketch some days ago of how I imagined Bea (excuse me for the blurry quality). I hope to pick up drawing soon, as I'm now flooded with all kinds of work, except the one I like the most.

I took this photo the moment I completed my Psychology internship-paper...completely crazy with exhilaration.

I shot it with the iMac I recently purchased, which I plan to use for my illustrations.

Clouds

I'm slowly starting to draw more and more. I purchased a Moleskine-sketchbook and find it very handy! Here are some clouds; more to come!

Almost finished with my internship-paper, then 2 more months of internship, then finished with my Psychology studies!!
I would very much like to publish some illustrations soon!

A friend of mine asked me to make a painting for her birthday. I finished it the other day after month's of work with long intermissions. But I'm pleased with the result!

I was very happy with a few opportunities to sketch from life! I LOVE it! These sketches were all done in 1-3 minutes.

Thomas Blackshear

What a terrific painting of Beauty and the Beast! I suspect Thomas Blackshear was influenced by Gustav Klimt as well as Maxfield Parrish; the result is very elegant.

Telephone scribbles...

Sketching while also calling on the telephone can somehow loosen up your drawings...!

Fiep Westendorp

I recently bought a postcard with an illustration of Fiep Westendorp printed on it. The same illustration is portrayed below. It reminded me of just how great an illustrator Fiep was!

De kruistocht van Dries de Betonne

I have written about Peter van Straaten before...he's one of Hollands greatest illustrators. In 1981 van Straaten published a comic of political satire on Dries van Agt titled 'De kruistocht van Dries de Betonne' ('The crusade of Dries the Concrete'). The comic originated 'from the sketchbook of an unofficial observer' as van Straaten puts it, and deals with van Agts' leadership when he was Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
Van Straaten dedicated his comic to Harold Foster (whom in fact was a source of inspiration for van Straaten when he was young). The homage to Foster is evident and van Straaten does a wonderful job!

Piet Wijn

Piet Wijn (b. 1929) illustrated in +- 1979 the story 'Jorrit'. The story is written by Rindert Kromhout and was published exclusively in Donald Duck magazine. I have only two illustrations of this story and wish I had more...! What a GEM!
