composition

Every now and then I have these 'moods' and I start studying specific subjects on how to draw them. Now more and more I'm interested in composition. So I sketch little frames and draw shapes in them and I try to figure out what's interesting to look at. I find it's really a craft to make an interesting picture! I read this whole section on composition in a 'Famous Artists Course' book (my parents have one of the original books, lucky me!), but I guess it all comes down to practice. Perhaps this one is for a painting?

(I'm also looking forward to the publication of Hans Bacher's production design book...I can't wait!)

Let's go surfin' now!

I haven't posted anything for so long so it's time to make up. This one's an illustration for my studentsclub. Another student will digitally place a text on the illustration which will make it appear as if it were surfing the wave. Ambitiously I started out looking for surfing photo's as a reference and in comicbooks. In the end my father mentioned to me the famous drawing of Japanese artist Hokusai and I used that as a reference.

Lady Justice

It's a cartoon I made today for a roommate's Bachelor-thesis. Technically speaking..it's not the greatest cartoon you'll ever see, but it was much fun to make it and I like it. (it even has a bit of a 'Peter Pontiac edge' to it)

Again Severin

As it turns out my blog is mentioned on the official Alec Severin-website (see links.) Wow, I feel honored. I've met mr. Severin a few times on comic-markets and besides being a great artist (his originals are stunning!), he's also very friendly. These encounters make ofcourse cherished memories.

Randy Newman

Wow, today I saw 'James and the Giant Peach' with the musicalscore by Randy Newman. And as always I was so enchanted by his music. I read in a review his music was described as having a 'colourful palette'. Well, that's one way to put it. His gentle (film)music is to touching and I always get mesmerised by it. I start dreaming of people and places and situations (really!) while listening to his music. I wonder off and forget everything around me. It's just so moving. Here are the lyrics of his song 'Same Girl':

You’re still the same girl you always were
You’re still the same girl you always were
A few more nights on the street that’s all
a few more holes in your arms
a few more years with him

You’re still the same girl
with the same sweet smile
that you always had
the same blue eyes like the sun
the same clear voice that I always
you’re still the same girl...
that I love

I'm not a music expert but his piano playing is só subtle, and sad and beautiful and colourful all at the same time and well I could keep on going... I want to make a caricature/portret of him, kind of as a hommage to this great artist. I'll try to post it soon.
Two interviews with him you can find on (the last one is part in Dutch):

Rien Poortvliet

Rien Poortvliet deserves all the acclaim there is to get! This Dutch(!) artist is unrivaled in his wildlife art. One of my most treasured books however is his depiction of the life of Jezus Christ. The book is entitled "Hij was één van ons" ("He was one of us").

horses

A couple of years back it was my plan to study horses, drawing them from real life. It was quite a challenge! I never practised very much and quit after a while...it's still a good idea, but for another time.
